RMN Western Fleet Commander Visits Kukup Forward Operating Base
LUMUT, 6 May - Rear-Admiral Datuk Abu Bakar bin Mohd Ajis, Commander of the Western Fleet paid an official visit to the Forward Operating Base (FOB) established at the operations unit of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Marine Police Force (MPF) to strengthen border control of national waters in Peninsular Malaysia against the entry of Illegal Immigrants (PATI) as well as curbing the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The main objective of the establishment of the FOB is to provide logistical assistance to all assets of the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) located in the area of operation as well as the operation of interceptor boats used throughout the OP BENTENG LAUT.
Currently, there are several maritime operations carried out by the RMN under the supervision of the National Task Force (NTF) administered by the National Security Council (NSC).
Nevertheless, the results of the study conducted by NTF have identified several hotspot routes for the entry of illegal immigrants that have the potential to be breached. This is based on the loophole and the closest distance to Malaysia's land border waters.
Therefore, there is a FOB with three main components, namely the deployment of a Commanding Officer, AST and LST Support Team and Interceptor Boat Crew in each of the six FOB locations namely, Kuala Linggi in Melaka, Batu Pahat, Kukup and Teluk Ramunia in Johor, JARAK TLDM Station in Perak and finally Batu Uban, in Penang.
The visit of the Commander of the Western Fleet to FOB Kukup was welcomed by FOB Commander Lt Kdr Muhammad Hisham bin Abd Halim TLDM with a briefing on operations, visits around the jetty, banquet and friendly chat and photo session with RMN members on duty.
The purpose of this visit is to ensure the equipment, facilities and the welfare of members who are in the FOB at the optimum level in carrying out operations, especially by 1 Syawal.
